The message of the new video that Underground created for Believe Out Loud is clear: It's time for clergy to speak up and welcome the gay and lesbian members of their communities. We anticipated a near universal positive reaction to this Love Thy Neighbor message of inclusion. Not so fast. A group of self-identified progressive Christians refused to run the ad because they wanted to "avoid taking sides on this issue." Fortunately, the refusal set the blogosphere abuzz and helped generate dozens of news articles and over 40,000 views in just over two weeks.
Underground doesn't shy away from producing provocative campaigns that start conversations. It's our stock and trade. The video is part of a multi-faceted campaign that includes a website, advertising and social media working together to generate support for LGBT equality in the church and in broader society.
