Life at Underground

VCU’s Brandcenter recently invited Underground to participate in their Friday Speaker Series (January 23, if anyone is in the Richmond,VA neighborhood), and be profiled in a class.

Below are some words and images we sent to the grad students at VCU so they could see what the serious business of saving the world is really like.

this is kira, senior account manager. it is kira's birthday. underground's has purchased the rights to the color orange. we are the only agency in the united states allowed to use orange with favored gum, chew toys and natural flowers (we could not secure the rights to fake orange flowers. goodby got to those first. hacks.) hence, we go overboard every chance we get. esp. with kira. and esp. on kira's bday.

this is our account team. kira, heath and lindsey. they are pointing towards the future.

this is our account team. kira, heath and lindsey. they are pointing towards the future. because here at underground, that. is. what. we. do.

this is food. oft seen at underground. on the right, bfast from bake sale betty's. a quaint establishment at 51st and telegraph in oakland, bake sale betty's always has a line out the door and down the block, despite the fact they have no sign. betty, a former pastry chef at the famous chez panisse in berkeley wears a neon blue wig on her head a sleeping baby to her front side as she and her staff crank out thousands of the best fried chicken sandwiches you've ever had. here, above, are a sampling of scones. and banana bread. usually i hate bananas, but her bread is an exception. on the left, snake oil that julie brought back from her recent trip to india. nobody has tasted this yet.

this is julie back from her recent trip to india. her dogs, lola and chi, are usually in the office. but not today. they are too tired after staying up all night comping up some ads for PETA and the Humane Society. Something about animal abuse in the work place. I didn't really get it.

this is john. john has vision. john also makes movies and music and babies. he is good at all of it.

this is claudine, if claudine were stuff. claudine likes funky illustration, speaks german and recently moved to the top floor of her apt. building and now has a gorgeous view of the city in one of sf's best neighborhoods. claudine will be having many outdoor parties on her new patio. and is getting a sleeper couch. and is inviting me over. and giving me a key. and considering adopting me. and getting a restraining order. like everyone else. sigh.

this is the view, as we think it should be. (less than a week to go!!)

it is called fodder, people. fodder. jeez.

this is where we have meetings. the conference room is to the left but we only take clients in there, so we'll spare you. the window looks across the street to some internet company (in sf, imagine!), and occasionally we catch glimpses of young up and comings sleeping on the windowsill. ah, the good old days of "paying dues". (not one of us here misses them.)
